Quotes from Candidates...
November 13, 2002
John Black: Defeated
two-term incumbent
Said straight-ticket Republican
voters played a role in his defeat and that Republicans unfamiliar with
his record were more likely to vote the party line. ''I don't think that
suggests I was a bad judge or bad person,'' he said.
Mary Ellen Kinser, New
Judge Executive:
Got 52 percent of the vote
to become the first woman and first Republican to win the Judge Executive
office in Oldham. Kinser said that in local elections, voters consider
individual candidates.
Sheriff Steve Sparrow:
''I think they're voting
for the people right now, not necessarily the party,''
''I've been out knocking
on doors every night, except Sundays, since June 3. I truly feel like that's
one of the reasons for that margin.
I'd like to think that people
did recognize what progress (the sheriff's department has) made,''
''I honestly believe that
they like what they see and they want to keep the progress going.''
Jailer Mike Simpson:
Said that although he carried
precincts in Buckner and La Grange, where he has worked for the last 16
years, he lost votes in other areas of the county. And he said that not
only are more Republicans moving into the county, but also many Oldham
Democrats are more aligned with conservative causes than with a political
party. Those conservative Democrats are more likely to cross over than
Republican voters are, he said.
MAGISTRATE DISTRICT 2
Wayne Theiss:
A Democrat who lost his
Fiscal Court seat to Republican Beverly McCombs, said Republicans fielded
a full slate of candidates this year and that their ''machine'' worked
better than the Democrats' did.
